Graduation Day or A Yetu Academy Success Story 2025

This past year, one of the most moving and powerful stories from the Yetu Academy came from a family of three siblings who had recently emigrated from the Democratic Republic of Congo. With little notice, they were placed into Pittsburgh’s Allderdice High School — a major transition that came with language barriers, cultural shock, and academic challenges.

Despite these overwhelming odds, the family became deeply engaged with the Yetu Academy. Through our mentoring, culturally grounded support system, and the safe space created by our teaching artists and staff, the students found not only a sense of belonging but also the tools to thrive.

Over the course of the year, we witnessed their transformation. They showed up to classes, participated in workshops, and leaned into the community support. By the end of the academic year, all three siblings proudly graduated — a remarkable milestone for any family, but especially meaningful considering the journey they had undertaken.

Now, they are preparing to begin college in the fall. Their success is a powerful reminder of why we do this work. The Yetu Academy is more than an arts program — it’s a bridge, a family, and a launching pad for immigrant youth to achieve their full potential.
